Cutlery Design Solutions

Earlier today we sent you our prices and options through the Coupa platform. Most of this is raw data, while we also want to show you more about the product itself, our solution, our company and what we can do for American Airlines. That is why we decided to send you this web-based presentation. All this information is carefully described spread over these four topics.

Introduction Sola – The Netherlands:

Sola – The Netherlands is a designer, manufacturer and supplier of stainless steel cutlery and many other in-flight catering equipment, like coffee pots, tongs and baskets. Established in 1922 we started with the production of cutlery that we all use at home. Soon this grew into a division for retail, hospitality, cruise lines and the hotel/restaurant business.

The airline division is a separate company under the umbrella of Sola, specialized for our line of business as it is definitely different compared to any other market. The cutlery designs are different, mostly smaller, lighter and of a different material. In most cases a logo is present. At this moment we supply to more than 80 airlines worldwide. Almost our entire range of products is custom made for our clients. We do have our own range of products, that can serve as a starting point for new projects, but overall airlines want to have their own design matching with the rest of their tray-setting. And that is where we are at our best.

My name is Hans Engels. I am with Sola for 22 years. I am responsible for product development and sales for Europe, North, Middle and South America. We have not met before, but what we normally do, is meet once or twice per year to discuss all on-going business. On top of that, I prefer to step by your office prior to IFSA as well, while I am in the area. Due to Covid this could not be done for quite some time now. The world and our industry is recovering, but the IFSA trade show will be held as planned in October. Soon I will come up with some dates to meet. It would be nice to meet you in person.

RFP & The Sola Solution

The E.U. has banned all single-use-plastics on board. This was announced in 2018 and ever since many suppliers have been developing sustainable ideas. Over time we have seen many products from various exotic raw materials, like bamboo. Sola does not comment on other people’s ideas or products. We simply focus on what we have developed.

What is this product that we have developed?
We are specialized in stainless steel products. Stainless steel is a natural product and no chemicals are added during the production process. It can be 100% recycled, and it can be used both rotable or disposable. It can be washed as the base material is the same as your “normal” cutlery.

This cutlery is made in a 0.5 mm thickness making it ultralight. We have developed four designs in total. Each design has special features that makes it strong enough despite its lightness. Quickly we realized that if this type of cutlery needs to replace plastics, we cannot produce this in the normal way. It must be done in a high-speed, low-maintenance production facility. We have a full production line ready for mass production, which is also easy to expand if necessary. Production can run 24/7 if needed.

For this RFP we have decided to quote the Palm design. Please see an image of Palm here on the right. If you want, we can develop a unique design for you. This comes at a MOQ, but your volumes are good for that. Also pricing is now focused on Palm. If AA decides to develop something custom made, this might have an impact on price up- or down. That really depends on what we come up with in the end. Also a logo can be added on this cutlery.

Rotable vs. disposable:
As mentioned before – this is a stainless steel option. It means it can be washed and re-used. Whether that is something you want to do, is ofcourse up to American.  In a world where the focus is drawn to being more sustainable, this is a key-element, and an absolute advantage over other materials. In case you want to wash this cutlery – we need to think off re-packing it into a new set/kit. We are also able to supply this product in bulk, so this can be achieved as well. It involves a possible cooperation with other suppliers in order to get this done, but we are open for any operation as long as that gets the job done

Extras

Developing these 4 designs was the start of this solution. We are also able to supply the following:

Pouch:
We can pack this cutlery into a paper pouch, which also can be recycled 100%. We can print the AA logo or any other text on it. Please see an example on the left.

Pepper and salt:
We can add a standard pepper and salt set to the pouch. We purchase this from the same supplier that serves other US based airlines as well.

Napkin:
We also have the option to add a napkin to the pouch.

Together with the knife, fork and spoon makes this a complete 5-1 kit that is a sustainable replacement for your current set.

Additional options:

Stirrer:
Sola is known for its ideas and options. It is possible to add, (or leave out the spoon), a stirrer. It is made from the same steel and finish.

Logo:
It is possible to add an imprinted logo on the napkin if that is desired.

Spork:

We also have the option to develop a spork. A European airline has the idea to only serve soup & salads, where the idea is to mix the spoon and fork.

1,0 mm version:
Palm in the original version is made in a 0.5 mm version. This also explains the remarkable light weight per item. However, we can also imagine that if AA might want to use this cutlery as a rotable version. That is why we came up with a double thickness of 1.0 mm. It is the exact same design, but just double and could last more washings compared to its thinner version.

Prices and Conditions

All prices and conditions are carefully listed in attachment # 3 in Coupa. Most of these are standard conditions. Some of them needed much more attention and are not 100% set. I am referring to for instance the increased pricing for container transport. Even though both American Airlines and Sola have no influence in this global price increase, we do need to deal with it the best way we can. That is why we are offering a transparent and fair solution that could work for us.

But the most key-elements need to be right. Our industry is on its way back. Demand and volumes will be unpredictable for the coming period of time. The only way to cope with uncertain factors is have enough stock. Not many suppliers are fond of building large volumes, but experience has learned us that this is the solution deal with uncertainties. Both AA and Sola cannot run the rist of being low or out of stock.

We are willing to think with you and invest in our future business. We hope that our overall package will be a success for us.

Environmental responsibility:

Since 2018 we’ve been a member of Amfori BSCI. Amfori is an organization which is committed to open and sustainable trade, something Sola The Netherlands is eager to contribute to. Open and personal communication with our suppliers is a key factor in this for us. We’ve been working with some suppliers for several years, if not decades. Not only does this enable us to supply the very best products, but also ensures that our products are produced in a responsible manner.

What else do we supply?

Cutlery is our core business. Please find below a selection of designs we supply to other airlines. Followed by a gallery of other products we normally display at the various trade shows. I know these products are not part of this RFP, but we still want to show you what we do, and what other options you have available with Sola.
